![]() I tracked down whatever b-sides I could, finally caught up to Drones and Simulation Theory. That was around when I discovered Eternally Missed and Easily, two absolutely gorgeous songs I somehow missed completely. ![]() Then for a time I gradually drifted on to other bands, and didn't get back into Muse again properly until late 2020/early 2021. I spent that entire summer listening to nothing else. And that was what finally drove me to try Showbiz and Origin of Symmetry (and Hullabaloo and The Resistance since I missed them). I remembered loving Madness at first listen and not really grasping the context of why people got mad. Again though, didn't investigate any further.įast forward to about 2012, when the fan uproar over Madness happened. And it completely blew my mind that this and BHAR were by the same band. Got a good chuckle at the Knights of Cydonia mv pretty much being a literal adaptation of the song.Īlmost a year later, completely by chance I found Absolution at a department store near my school. Enjoyed it just fine, didn't rock my world. Then Starlight came out not long after, and I remembered liking how it reminded me of Coldplay (back when they were still good), and that cemented my decision to get Black Holes and Revelations on CD. ![]() And two things immediately struck me about the song: it was weird, and it was fun. In 2006 I was still in college and picking my way through all the classic bands - Radiohead, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, Chili Peppers, you get the picture. So I was one of those filthy casuals whose first exposure to Muse was Supermassive Black Hole. It's kind of sad really, I've never been close to as enthusiastic about any band before or since. So yeah, still one of my favourite bands, still fuck with like 60% of their post-BHaR music, but obviously don't hold the same level of reverence for me as they did when I was younger. Whether it was a combination of me getting older and discovering appreciation for other bands (Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, Deftones, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode etc), my opinion of the band has obviously changed.įactor in they also adopted a pretty radical shift in tone from Knights of Cydonia onwards and everything got quite knowingly silly and over-the-top. I'm now 28 and have watched Muse live 6 times, seen them develop over the years to what they are today. It took me YEARS to realise that the band did not want to be taken as seriously as I thought back then, and everything was a bit tongue-in-cheek. No one could tell me any different and I was steadfast in these beliefs. When I first discovered Muse at 13, just around the time Black Holes came out, I thought for years (up until like age 20/21) that they were legitimately the greatest band to have ever walked the earth and Matt was without doubt the most talented musician and vocalist working in music. Really fun to see that Muse is entering "Dad's music" territory. What does Muse mean to you? How did it start? Did it help you through some shit?ĮDIT: Thanks for all the responses. I think what I would like to have a shot at right now is just some awesome nostalgia. It's hard to even consider some folks fans at this point. I see a lot of negativity with this group. ![]() I don't want to do that with this fandom. My wife loves BTS, she abandoned the fandom because they are exceptionally toxic. Or how about the wicked part of Eternally Missed!? That great solo that you could feel the fuzz in? I remember discovering Crying Shame and the incredible solo in it. What really got you into Muse? I remember working a shitty part time job in highschool, walking down the road, Nature_1 blasting in my ears. So I want to put all that aside for just a moment. I can't be the only one who feels like whenever new Muse comes around there is no pleasing some folks. With all due respect you have a bunch of hard asses from when Muse started crying over how things have changed, new members of the community just vibing and learning their way around, and you have those impartial folks who have loved Muse through all their shifts. I think anyone who has spent enough time in this sub or in any Muse forum knows Muse is a very divisive group. The community looks like an odd mix between cynics and hopefuls. Now lets address the elephant in the room.
